When I go door to door, I say, “I’m your neighbor Jeff encouraging you in the faith that you are a son (or daughter) of God.” And then I fall silent, allow the other person to respond, and take it from there. Sometimes I find it appropriate to ask, “What does it mean to you to be a daughter (or son) of God? Most of the time, momentum in conversation develops quickly. Without mentioning God, I easily, spontaneously, intuitively find some observation, question, approach, that leads into ways of imparting a hint of meaning or an expression of value that strengths the connection with the other person. I do not need to use the G-word in order to convey an understanding.
Once we find the Creator and begin to realize his spirit within, when we approach him with the faith and trusting dependence of a little child, we can find him as our Father. Getting to know him, we come to understand that he loves us all equally as family. He gives us freedom to choose the name for him that fits our experience. His parental love and mercy, his spirit presence within, his will of goodness–so many truths follow from the central truth of the family of God.
