Here’s an experiment you could try to move yourself into true worship.
A life illuminated by worship has two phases: full worship and activities that are done worshipfully.
Countless people have tasted that peak experience of worship which is the most direct person-to-Person relating with God we could ever know. It’s beyond words and beyond the control of the human mind. You can do it in a group. You can do it by yourself.
Step one in this experiment is to familiarize yourself with worshipful activities. Here you don’t have to have your mind full of God. Your mind is focused on whatever you are doing, driving, washing the dishes, whatever, but there is a joyfulness, a celebration of value going on, you are doing this together with God and that feels wonderful. Worshipful activities can be easier because the focus on the activity siphons off the mind’s nervousness.
Step two. You are settling in to a time when you would like that spontaneous surge of worship to lead you in. But it’s not happening. So you remember how wonderful it was to do something earlier. And you do that remembering worshipfully. Actually, it doesn’t have to be an act of remembering; it could be any conscious act that you are doing worshipfully.
Step three. Once you have activated that worshipful mindfulness of anything, you take that into worshipful relating to God. And voila! There you are. Worshipful relating is in fact worship itself.
